What Is a Urologist?

A urologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, medical treatment, and surgical procedures relating to the kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, and genitourinary system. Among the specialized areas that urologists treat are prostate cancer and other prostate problems, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, kidney stones, other urological cancers, vasectomies, vasectomy reversals, urinary tract infections, and pediatric urological care. As with other medical specialties, urology requires study and training beyond the standard medical school and internship years. Indeed, because of so many remarkable advances in recent years in diagnosis, treatment, and surgical procedures, it is vital that today's urologist be committed to a process of continuing education.

What Is a Board-Certified Urologist?

Once a person has graduated from medical school, he or she is an M.D., qualified to practice medicine. Only by completing many years of surgical training followed by strenuous written and oral examinations is a doctor considered a board-certified urologist. Dr. David C. Allen, Dr. Mark F. Ellison, Dr. Gary R. Walton, Dr. Robert R. Byrne, and Dr. Matthew D. Young have been so qualified and have been accepted as members of the American Board of Urology. After becoming board-certified, a urologist must participate in continuing education programs and periodic reexamination to maintain board certification.

Specialty Providers

In addition to our urologists, we also have specialty providers who assist in your diagnosis and treatment. These providers include Kimberly Parker, NP, and Marie Anderson, Physician's Assistant (PA).

Your Personal Physician

Your personal or primary care physician may have referred you to The Urology Clinic for evaluation. After a physical examination by one of our providers, a complete report will be sent to your physician. If, in our opinion, your condition requires continued treatment, we will be pleased to care for you in conjunction with your referring physician. Problems concerning your general medical health, other than those related to urological conditions, should remain under the supervision of your personal physician.
