Prostate Biopsy Instructions

Your appointment is scheduled in our office

on _______________ at ____________ with Dr. ___________________.

We recommend the following before your biopsy:

  1. Avoid heavy food within 4 hours of your biopsy to prevent an upset stomach during the procedure. You may have clear liquids or light nourishment within 2 hours of your scheduled visit, but please limit your intake to prevent nausea or vomiting. A light breakfast or lunch is recommended depending on the time of your appointment (ex. toast and juice/coffee.) Please let us know if you have any questions.
  2. An antibiotic will be given to you to take the night before the procedure. If you have a cardiac murmur or other heart defects, please make us aware so that your antibiotic regimen can be extended, especially if you require antibiotics before dental procedures.
  3. A Fleets enema should be used within 2 hours of your procedure.
  4. Someone should accompany you to drive you home following the procedure.
  5. Please do not take aspirin 7 days prior to the biopsy. If you are on other blood thinning medications, please make us aware, as these need to be stopped prior to your procedure.
  6. After the biopsy, you may notice burning upon urination or see blood in the urine or stool. Do not let this worry you as it is quite common after a biopsy and should resolve within a week. Let us know if it is not resolving with time. You may also see blood in the ejaculate. This is also very common and may take a bit longer to resolve.
  7. Take the antibiotics given to you for three days. If you have a temperature of 101° or higher, call the office or on call your physician. If you develop chills or sweats, are having difficulty urinating, or feel very poorly, please call the office or on call physician for further instructions.
  8. Biopsy results may not be back for 5-7 working days. You will either have an appointment or our staff will call you with results and further plans
