PFMR

Pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation (PFMR) is a non-surgical treatment to help rehabilitate the muscles of the pelvis that then help with bladder and bowel control.  The muscles of the pelvic floor are responsible for supporting the bladder and rectum as well as the uterus and ovaries within the body.  With aging and particularly after childbirth, these muscles become weaker or dysfunctional.  Many women suffer chronic problems like stress or urge incontinence, pelvic pain, or chronic constipation because of these dysfunctional muscles.  Some men who undergo surgery for prostate cancer have difficulty with urinary control following surgery, and these muscles are crucial to regaining urinary control.  PFMR allows patients to identify these muscles and then begin a regimen to strengthen them

Indications

  • Weakened pelvic floor muscles
  • Stress incontinence
  • Inability of patient to identify and use muscles of pelvic floor

Procedure

After your physician determines that you may benefit from PFMR, you return for an initial evaluation with our nurse practitioner who specializes in rehabilitation techniques.  This evaluation lasts about an hour and involves a review of your history and testing the muscles for particular weakness.  A special sensor is connected to a computerized system, and your areas of strength and weakness are identified.  An individualized rehabilitation plan is then created for you.  Most patients require five to seven sessions (about thirty minutes each) in our PFMR center, in addition to practicing at home, in order to attain their goals.  Up to 70% of patients can become dry by using these exercises.

Advantages

  • Treatment for incontinence not requiring surgery or ongoing medication
  • Emphasizes the body’s natural systems
  • Quick and efficient office treatment
