Causes of Incontinence

The loss of urine is a common symptom and has many possible causes.

  • Bladder outlet obstruction

  • Urinary tract infection or irritation
  • Medications
  • Associated medical problems (such as diabetes or constipation)
  • Limited physical mobility

Evaluation

The evaluation begins with a detailed history and physical examination and may also include the following:

  • Urine culture and sensitivity
  • Urine cytology
  • PSA

  • Cystoscopy

Treatment

Treatment is individualized to each patient, depending on the underlying cause, and often more than one is used to yield the best result.
