Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED), previously referred to as impotence, is the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. This disorder affects one in 10 men. At The Urology Clinic, we recognize the sensitivity of this topic and help patients move forward with one of the many effective treatments available.

Causes

  • Nerve disorders and injuries
  • Blood supply abnormalities
  • Some cancer treatments
  • Hormone disorders
  • Medications
  • Psychological conditions

Aging may cause changes in sexual function. In addition, aging increases the chances of having other medical conditions that can contribute to ED. However, age in itself should not cause erectile dysfunction, and there is no reason that getting older should prohibit an active sex life.

Evaluation

The evaluation begins with a detailed history and physical examination and may include the following:

  • Blood tests
  • Symptom score
  • Penile doppler
  • PSA

Treatment

  • Reversal of potential causes
  • Medications
  • Penile injection therapy
  • Urethral suppositories
  • Vacuum pump
  • Penile prosthesis

See our Erectile Dysfunction Educational Brochure for additional information.
