Circumcision

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis.

Indications

  • Phimosis
  • Cosmetic appearance
  • Recurring infections
  • Penile cancer
  • Allow for placement of bladder catheter

Procedure

The patient lies on a procedure table and is given IV medication for conscious sedation as well as a local anesthetic. The foreskin is then removed with surgical instruments and stitches placed to bring together the skin of the penis. A bandage is then placed and the procedure is complete.

Side Effects

Most patients will have some tenderness and sensitivity to the head of the penis following circumcision, but this resolves in a few days. Complications are rare, but may include infection at the surgical site, bleeding or hematoma, removal of too much foreskin that can create some discomfort with initial erections, scarring or numbness of the penis.
